AHPCE is for all PSWs, hospice volunteers and other unregulated healthcare providers
who have completed the Fundamentals course
and 6 months work experience following Fundamentals.

AHPCE Performance Objectives:
After 6 months experience in his/her role following active participation in the AHPCE course and with support from peers and managers, the learner will have the ability to positively influence the illness experience for the person and family to the extent that the learner:
►consistently demonstrates and practises sensitivity, understanding and respect for the individuality of the person/family and team/caregivers involved in the palliative illness experience
►effectively communicates with the person, family and team
►observes, recognizes and reports issues and changes in any of the domains of issues associated with illness and bereavement
►provides palliative supportive strategies within his/her scope of practice
►actively contributes to the team approach to hospice palliative care.
This is an 8 week course that includes:
· a 3 hour class per week
· completion of a practical application assignment for each session that may be in the form of a case study, a self-reflection or resource information.
AHPCE is funded by the Ministry of Health and Long-Term Care through the Community and Facility Palliative Care Interdisciplinary Education Service and is currently recognized throughout Southern Ontario.
