♦ Chris Sherwood, retired Palliative Care Consultant for the Brant, Haldimand and Norfolk Counties, was the 2009 recipient of the Dorothy Ley Award
The Dorothy Ley Award of Excellence, presented by the Ontario Palliative Care Association (OPCA), is awarded annually in recognition of an individual or team effort to advance and improve the quality of palliative and end-of-life care. Chris has been involved in provision of Hospice Palliative Care (HPC) for over 15 years. He committed his professional life to broadening the cause and educating individuals and groups at the local, LHIN, Provincial and National Level. As a Palliative Pain and Symptom Management Consultant he acted as a mentor and role model for nurses and other interdisciplinary team members both through his role as a consultant and an educator. Chris also has a wonderful sense for advocating, both for individuals, as well as for system designs. It is our great fortune that he realized his leadership strength and that it would bring better care to patients and families with his vision for improving systems in our palliative care communities, as well as our larger health care system. His legacy continues to be carried on by those who knew and worked with Chris, and his guidance, expertise, experience and compassion are still sought by many who remain strong in attempting to fulfill his dream. see OPCA's 2009 Summer newsletter (Publications and Reports)
